communityAugusta, GA --
It's a new era for public housing in Augusta.
The Legacy at Walton Oaks is now officially open. It's the city's first mixed-used housing development.
This first phase has 75 units for those 55 and older with half of the residents low income.
Alicia Porter, property manager: "It just shows with mixed-income you can have beautiful housing for all folks to enjoy a neighborhood together. The sense of community we are aleady seeing here just shows we're changing the ways things have been done and I think the future is very bright for everybody here."
The complex is already 20 percent occupied, but half the units are leased. The complex is expected to be full by the end of the year.
Another 350 units for families are planned for later phases of the project.
